Seeking part-time Spanish Language Instructor for Fall2025

Spanish Instructor for CUSLAR’s Spanish Language Program
The Committee on U.S.-Latin American Relations seeks to hire a Spanish language instructor for adults and families in the Ithaca area.

Job Description

The job will entail preparing for and teaching up to four evening and or weekend classes per week. The class size will be no larger than 15 students.

The instructor will assess students’ learning levels, pay attention to and consider the students’ Spanish language learning needs and goals. They will prepare activities, lessons and occasional assignments that support the students’ work toward those goals. They will encourage active student engagement during the classes. The ideal candidate will have training in teaching a second language. They should be a fluent Spanish speaker.

The program is expected to begin in mid-September 2025. The Spanish Language Program may include 2 divisions, an Adult Instruction Division and a Spanish Families Division. 

Adult Division: Depending on student demand, the program typically consists of Beginner/Intermediate and/or Advanced Classes. Classes typically last for ten weeks, with two 50-minute classes per week. 

Spanish Families Division: ¡Hola Amigos! are classes for children and their guardian(s). Classes typically run for two five-week sessions, meeting one hour per week. The schedule (day/time of classes) and location will be determined by the instructor and the CUSLAR Board. 

This is a part time, casual position with no benefits, paid an hourly wage of $30 per hour. In addition to classtime, CUSLAR provides a one-time payment of 5 hours of planning time per course prior to the start of the course. For every hour of adult classes, we provide one hour of paid prep per week. For every hour of family classes, we provide 0.5 hours of paid prep per week.

CUSLAR is fiscally sponsored by the Center for Transformative Action (CTA). The applicant selected by the CUSLAR hiring committee will be an employee of Center for Transformative Action at Cornell University.

The instructor will be supervised by the CUSLAR Board.

Qualifications:

-Candidate must have experience teaching Spanish and have skills to prepare. curriculum and teach in a group setting.
-Candidate should be a native or near native speaker of the Spanish Language.
-Candidate should be able to incorporate diverse pedagogical techniques.

Seeking a Part-Time Coordinator

Mission: The Committee on U.S.-Latin American Relations (CUSLAR) seeks to promote peace, justice and mutual understanding among the people of the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. The members of CUSLAR are a diverse group of people united in our concern about the role of the United States in the social, political and economic affairs of the region. CUSLAR supports the right of the people of Latin America and the Caribbean to self-determination and control over decisions that affect their lives and communities. CUSLAR is a project of the Center for Transformative Action (CTA).

Job title: Coordinator.

Reports to: The CUSLAR Advisory Board and Anke Wessels, Executive Director of the Center for Transformative Action (CTA).

Summary of responsibility: The Coordinator will receive initial training and then have overall operational responsibility for CUSLAR’s programs and execution of its mission. The Coordinator is responsible for following all CTA fiscal sponsorship policies and procedures, and will receive supervision and guidance from the Advisory Board.

Responsibilities

  • Programming and Organizing- to support CUSLAR’s mission to educate about the role of the US in the social, political and economic affairs of the region.
    • Plan and oversee educational programming, including guest speakers, events, and films, etc.,
    • Facilitate political education of Ithaca College and Cornell University student organizations and community volunteers through collaborative projects and events.
    • Maintain CUSLAR’s communications presence online and through print media, prioritizing the twice-annual CUSLAR Newsletter.
  • Fundraising and program administration
    • Identify and apply for funding to support CUSLAR programming via grants, individual donor contributions, university student activities funds (Student Activities Fund at Cornell and Office of Student Engagement at Ithaca College), faculty and departments.
    • Maintain communication with the CUSLAR Advisory Board and CTA staff for supervision and guidance.
    • Ensure that procedures for affiliation with CTA and university entities are maintained.
    • Support Spanish language instructors with board members for CUSLAR language-learning programming.
  • Coordination with CTA: The Project Director is responsible for working with CTA to ensure that CTA policies and procedures are followed across 4 general categories:
    • Governance: Maintains a project Advisory Board (AB) of at least five members that meet at least quarterly.  Submits AB meeting minutes to CTA, notifies CTA of changes in AB composition.  Ensures project’s organizational documents are up to date and submitted to CTA.  Signs a new Affiliation Agreement when there is a change in AB leadership.
    • Operations: In concert with the AB, ensures that project staff and volunteers are following all CTA policies and procedures, including those outlined in the Affiliation Agreement, the Fiscal Sponsorship Policies and Procedures document, and the Employee Handbook and Personnel Procedures.  Submits an annual report of project activities to CTA. Submits online, email, and print fundraising campaigns to CTA for approval. Notifies CTA of upcoming special events.  Reads and responds to CTA communications in a timely manner.
    • Financial: In concert with AB, monitors project’s financial health.  Works with AB and CTA to submit an annual budget.  Tracks project expenses.  Reviews monthly financial statements provided by CTA.  Approves all project expenses and deposits.  Submits grant applications to CTA for review 15 days in advance of due date.
    • Staff: Ensure all staff and volunteers have completed mandatory training.  If project has paid staff, Project Director approves employee time records and paid time off requests.  Completes annual performance reviews for all paid staff.

Hours and compensation: Fifteen hours a week. Compensation commensurate with experience, $25-27/hr. CTA is a living-wage employer.

Qualifications: The CUSLAR Coordinator will demonstrate their commitment to CUSLAR’s mission of contributing to peace, justice and mutual understanding in the hemisphere and have strong working knowledge of Latin America and U.S.-Latin American historical, political, and social relations. Candidates should have leadership, mentoring, communications, and cultural competency.  Spanish language fluency preferred.

  • Knowledge about US/Latin American relations and interest in promoting justice and mutual understanding among the people of the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • Experience and interest in supervising and mentoring undergraduate students
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish and/or Portuguese

  • Strong attention to detail in bookkeeping and finance
  • Fundraising and grant writing experience preferred

Direct Reports: Work-study students, 5-8 hours a week during fall, spring and possibly summer semesters. Coordinator works with Cornell Community Work-Study Program to approve student hours.
