SOA Vigil
Date: Friday, November 20, 2009 to Sunday, November 22, 2009
The School of the Americas (SOA), now the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (the WHISC or WHINSEC), originated in Panama in 1946 and moved to Fort Benning, Georgia in 1984. The SOA which is funded by U.S. taxpayers has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in tactics that have led to the torture, murder, and the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans. Annually, there is a vigil at Fort Benning (held by the organization School of the Americas Watch) where thousands of protesters gather to bring an end to the SOA.
